How to Find Antiques You Love
Do You Want to Buy Antiques that will stand the test of time? Consider these 5 things the next time you are on the hunt.
1. Care
- Does it Look Like this Item Has Been Taken care of with love? Check the item for Any Possible chips, cracks, paint loss, defects or Damage before you leave.
- “Dirt Don’t Hurt” A little dust can be taken care of with a brush, but if it’s grimy I usually walk away.
- Smell Test- Make Sure if you are buying something with fabric or upholstery that you give it a sniff test before taking it home.
2. Construction
- Materials- Look for High Quality Materials like marble, stone, hardwoods, crystal, etc.
- Age Appropriate Materials and Construction to help verify Authenticity. Are the materials used appropriate to the date of manufacture?
- Maker’s Marks, Hallmarks and Signatures are usually a sign of good quality. However, don’t discount the merit of a piece just for lack of signature. Examine the quality of the craftsmanship or artwork for yourself.
3. Know Your Time Period
- Different Design Elements are associated with specific time frames. Becoming familiar with these will help you find the perfect piece for your space.
- Examples: Art Nouveau, approx. 1890 to 1910, flowing lines, rounded edges, curved pieces, influenced by nature and female forms
Art Deco, approx. 1919 to 1939, geometric shapes and patterns, influenced by innovation like skyscrapers and motorcars
4. Do You Like it?
Do You really like this piece or are you just buying it because it’s trendy? If nobody else was going to look at it but you, would you still buy it?
5. The One that Got Away
